In Case You Missed It...
The importance of styling and why subtle nuances and little touches can make such a difference when getting dressed
I originally posted this on Instagram and realized that not everyone reads the captions or has an Instagram account, so I thought I would post it here as well.
When we work with proportions, create different silhouettes through tucking, tying or tailoring, and are able to pull two pieces together by way of layers, textures and accessories, you can immediately uplevel a simple top and bottom into a fully styled ensemble, with minimal effort.
For example, the photo on the left is not quite an outfit because it’s only comprised of two pieces. To elevate it into a fully styled look, I added just a few things but the outcome is very different. (You can watch the original video, here.)
Let me walk you through my process…
1. First, I tucked in my shirt all the way because it doesn’t have much drape so it would have laid funny only partially tucked. But depending on your preference and the cut and material of the top, you can opt for a full tuck or a front tuck. Either way, this helps create a waist and avoids any weird or bulky layering over the top of the pants.
2. Next, since I’m on the shorter side and these pants are a tad too long for my liking, I flipped the bottom hem up under themselves to give a bit of space and length between the bottom of the hem and the top pf my shoes. By showing some skin and some of your ankle, you can create length and nice lines, versus the fabric bunching up at the bottom making that area look crowded and cluttered.
Note: If you are worried about wearing something like this in cold weather and are afraid of your ankles getting cold, opt for a black bootie with a medium high shaft and wear thin black socks to create a streamlined monochromatic feel.
3. A rule of thumb to remember is, it’s not really an “outfit” if it’s made up of only two pieces. So we layer. I went with a cream shacket as my topper of choice, and I popped my collar and pushed up the sleeves to juge it up (aka style it / perk it up). This makes it look more interesting and showing a little wrist action never hurts.
4. And lastly, it’s time for the accessories! I chose my black and white vans, a simple black bag, a classic pair of sunglasses and a red lip for a pop of color. And there you have it! A fully styled outfit with minimal effort.
